Young Apprentice Task 1 - Design for a Wheelie Bin

Our first task was to think about a way of decorating a Wheelie Bin for a client who was going to a music festival.  He would be using the bin to store his belongings in whilst at the festival.  A Wheelie Bin is easy to move over mud and grass, it can store lots of items and it is waterproofHe required it to look different so that people at the festival would not mistake it for a rubbish bin!

The design had to be:

- Personalised to the client

- Eye-catching to the other people at the festival

- Include examples of music that the client likes or bands that are playing at the festival

- Big, bold and simple so that it would be easy to put onto a large wheelie bin.

We were very lucky to be able to meet the client who was Mr Barun from Whizz Kids! He brought in loads of things that he thought would help us with our designs such as T-shirts, CD's and posters. He also showed us some example of wheelie bin designs that he really liked. We asked him lots of questions so that we really got to know what he was looking for in a successful design.

          Our Designs

The Milkas Company

Milkas Wheelie Bin Design

Milkas' Explanation  - We thought lots about what Mr Barun had said when we interviewed him. We have included the names of his favourite bands so that other people at the festival will see what bands he likes and Mr Barun can have conversations about music with them. We blended each of our individual designs together so that everyone had their idea valued.

The W.A.G.O.L.L. Company

W.A.G.O.L.L's Design

W.A.G.O.L.L's Explanation - Our main aim was to make the design as colourful as possible. We looked at the logos of the bands that the client liked and used this too. When you open up the top lid, underneath is a Phoenix head which links up to the sides and makes one larger overall picture.

Super Sprinkles

Super Sprinkles Design

Super Sprinkles Explanation - We decided that each side would be very different to make it eye-catching from any viewpoint. We also put our company name on one of the sides so that this would  advertise our company to a wide audience. We have included many of the colours that we saw on Mr Barun's T-Shirts so it is personalised closely to him.

The Great Sale Company

The Great Sale Design

The Great Sale Compnay Explanation - Our design is colourful and really goes with someone who love music. We included many of Nathan's favourite bands and the music notes can also be played  on an instrument if you can read music. The green face is just for fun but it does make the bin stand out.

Presenting Our Ideas To The Client

The next day, Mr Barun came back and each company had to do a 2 minute presentation to him, explaining their company design.  In our presentation, we had to make sure we showed that we had ticked off all of the things on the intial brief that he had given us.  He was very impressed by the quality of the designs and that each one was totally different to anything else.  He asked us lots of questions about our designs to really make sure could explain our ideas clearly.

Mr Barun then took our designs away to think about and he will announce the winning team shortly.  The winning team will get to paint their design onto the bin so look out for the photos soon!
