Getting Ready for the Football World Cup 2022!
The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the 22nd FIFA World Cup. It will be hosted in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December 2022. It will be the first World Cup hosted in the Arab world and the second to be hosted fully in Asia. This will be the last World Cup with 32 teams, the next World Cups are going to have 48 teams. The tournament will be played in November and December because Qatar is a very hot country. This will be the first World Cup that isn't played in May, June or July. The current champions are France.
We will be following the tournament closely in school as well as holding our own tournament involving KS2. Teams from Year 5/6 and Year 3/4 will represent Clifton at two football tournaments held at Chantry High School and our Clifton Girls football team will once again compete in the Bex Lloyd Trophy Football tournament.
School Marathon Challenge: 5th October 2022
Over the last few weeks the whole school has been taking part in the TCS Schools Marathon Challenge where participants are given the challenge to walk, jog or run 2.6 miles over a 3 week period. This video explains more:
After doing so well running a mile in each class, our big school event was on Wednesday 5th October. The school were placed into 4 groups and each group were give a set amount of time to complete as many laps of the playground as they could.
The children did amazingly in completing the final 1.6 miles and demonstrated brilliant teamwork and support when cheering each other on. We are so proud to have taken part in this challenge and it was wonderful to have all of the school together, working on the same goal. Well done children!
Year 3 and 4 Hockey Tournament: 5th October 2022
On Wednesday, Mrs Quill took an enthusiastic and excited team of Woodpeckers children to the Chantry for our yearly quick sticks hockey tournament. We played 7 matches, and after a hesitant beginning the
children improved in skill and confidence at quite an astounding rate! We ended up drawing 2 matches and winning another 2 (one with a mighty 4:0 result!). The children represented their school absolutely brilliantly, showing teamwork, cooperation, a healthy sense of competition against the other schools and above all, support for their teammates.
A huge thank you to Mrs Hughes for organising our attendance at this fantastic tournament, and to the staff and young leaders at the Chantry for running such a friendly and inclusive event. It was wonderful to see so many parents supporting from the side-lines as well. The children made us all very proud, and we are all looking forward to our next sporting fixture!

Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 Cluster Football Tournament: 10th October 2022
A team from Eagles and Woodpeckers represented Clifton at the cluster football tournament on Monday 10th October. We were very excited as we had not been in a football tournament for a while and for some of us, it was our first one.
In the Year 3/4 tournament, there 6 different schools competing: Martley, Grimley, Hallow, Abberley, Broadwas and, of course, Clifton. We had to play matches against each team to work out who had the most points to win the overall tournament. Our first match was against Grimley (last year's winners) and we got off to a great start with a brilliant goal from almost the half way line. We then defended really well until the last few seconds of the match when Grimley scored. The match ended 1-1. Our defence was certainly a strength as we drew our next three matches 0-0. In our final match, against Hallow, we came back from 0-1 down to make it 1-1 to make it yet another draw!! Even though we would have liked a few more goals, we were quite happy that we had remained 'unbeaten' throughout the whole tournament! Overall, we came 3rd and we are really happy with our result.
In the Year 5/6 tournament, there were two pools and we were in Pool A against Grimley, Broadheath and Hallow. Our first match was against Grimley. It was a close and slightly nervy match which we drew 0-0. Our second match was against Broadheath and we also drew this with a score of this 1-1. Our final match in the pool against Hallow was very tough. Despite some good chances and some excellent defending, we lost this match 2-0.
When all the matches had been played, we waited to find out where we had come in the pool and it was announced that we came second overall with Hallow coming first. This meant that Hallow went through to the final against Great Witley. Great Witley ended up winning the overall tournament.
Overall, we are very proud of how we played, our sportsmanship and how we played positively all the way through. Thank you to Mrs Coleman and the young leaders at Chantry for organising the tournament. We would also like to thank Mrs Hughes, Mr Owen and our families for supporting us all the way through!

Year 1 and 2 Indoor Football Tournament: 1st December 2022
A very excited team from Robins class went to the Year 1 and 2 Indoor Football Tournament. There were lots of other teams there which was a little bit scary at first but we soon got over our nerves and couldn't wait to play our first matches. We played lots of matches and we tried hard to do well in every match. For some of us, it was the first time we had ever played football in a tournament and everyone tried really hard. Mrs Allen said:
I was so proud of all of the children. They kept persevering and stayed positive throughout the whole tournament. Every single one represented Clifton brilliantly! Well done Team!
Well done to the whole team; you did Clifton proud!

Whole School Santa Dash: 9th December 2022
The whole of Clifton school took part in the annual School Games Virtual Santa Dash today in order to get into the Christmas spirit! The children came to school as christmassy as they could and dashed around the playground: they trotted like reindeer, strolled like Santa, skipped like Elves, stomped like snowman and even star jumped like twinkling stars! It was a great event with some superb Christmas outfits on show. Well done everyone!
