History

Our Intent - What are we trying to achieve through our curriculum?

At Clifton Upon-Teme Primary school, the History curriculum aims to inspire all pupils from our youngest learners in the Early Years to those preparing for secondary school in Key Stage 2 to become curious, analytical thinkers with a broad understanding of the past. We want children to develop the confidence to question, investigate and interpret the world around them, learning to think like historians.

Our intention is for pupils to engage deeply with the past by exploring evidence, considering different perspectives and forming informed, balanced interpretations of events, people and societies. Through rich historical learning, pupils build an awareness of how history shapes identities, cultures and communities over time. We aim to nurture reflective, active citizens who can draw on historical understanding to make sense of the present and contribute thoughtfully to the future.

We recognise that high‑quality history teaching depends on strong subject knowledge. Our curriculum supports teachers in developing their expertise so they can deliver engaging, accurate and ambitious lessons. The curriculum is designed to be both accessible and aspirational, ensuring that every pupil regardless of background or starting point can participate, achieve and develop a lifelong interest in history.
