Book of the Week: Our Class is a Family
What a lovely first few days in Fledglings Class. The children have settled so well and have had so much fun!

Week Two
Book of the Week: All Are Welcome by Nicola Penfold
We have been finding out about how everyone is welcome and cared for in our school. We have been finding out lots more about each other and getting to know one another even better. We are getting used to our new routines such as sitting together for snack, having dough disco on the carpet, finding our Phonics spaces at the table and getting ready for lunch. The children have had great fun exploring inside and out in Choosing Time and have been wowing us with their creativity, particularly their vehicle constructions, the Shell Shop they made inside and their amazing ideas using the zoo animals. We have introduced our school rules of READY, RESPECTFUL, SAFE and have thought about how we can be these things in school. We have particularly talked about kind hands and about how we need to use our words, not our hands to settle disagreements in class.

In Maths we have been learning to 'match' by looking for two things that are the 'same'
Next Tuesday is our parents Phonics Workshop at 5:30PM. We look forward to seeing you all then. The following week we will be starting 'Story Club' where you are welcome to come and join us for a story with your child at the end of the school day.

Book of the Week: Incredible You by Rhys Brisenden and Nathan Reed
We have enjoyed sharing the things that make us incredible this week and have been wowed by the children's skills and talents. Thank you for your support with this. In class we have been doing a great job of earning 'Quiet Points' and earning lots of dance parties, which is great news! The children have continued to enjoy exploring our classroom and we have loved watching them make up stories in the zoo, paint beautiful paintings at the art table and build a fully-functioning fire engine (complete with diesel tank, siren, water hose and spare tyre!) in our outdoor construction area. We have also been exploring different emotions and thinking about the ways that we can manage feelings of sadness, excitement and anger at school. Our Calm Corner is being used so well to help us manage our own feelings, which is amazing so early in the term. Well done Fledglings!

We have begun Guided Reading this week (which is super exciting) and you will be getting your first wordless Phonics books on Monday. These will then be changed the following Monday.
In Maths we have been learning to find 'sets' and to 'sort' in different ways
It was lovely to see so many of you able to attend our Phonics workshop - I hope it was useful.

Week Four
Book of the Week: The Family Book by Todd Parr
We have really enjoyed talking about our families this week. We have been drawing, painting and building our families and sharing the lovely pictures and photographs you brought in. Thank you for this. One of the children has had a new sibling born this week so we have been very excited to talk about this news and about growing up. A big congratulations to them!
During the week, we have been exploring more ways to regulate our feelings and have focused on staying calm. We have learnt how to use the Calm Corner, lots of breathing techniques (starfish breathing, balloon breath, meditation) and seeking adult support. On Thursday, we put our new skills to the test with a building afternoon using Lego, Duplo, Stickle Bricks and Interstar and were so impressed by how the children were able to work together for a longer period of time, sorting out issues and deploying the techniques we've been learning. Teamwork makes the dreamwork! Well done!

It was great to see some of you able to attend Story Club this week. What a lovely time we had. We also hope you have enjoyed exploring your child's wordless reading books this week. The reading adventure really is getting going now!

Week Five
Book of the Week: The Can Caravan by Richard O'Neill
This week we have found out about different homes and talked about where we live. We worked really hard to draw our own homes and to include all the of the different features such as doors, windows and hedges. We have also enjoyed acting out the story of the 3 Little Pigs and thinking about what their homes were made from... and blowing them down! We have been building homes in construction inside and outside and exploring ocean animal's homes in the water tray. On Thursday we had so much fun junk modelling lots of different types of homes including houses, flats, caravans, boats, castles and lighthouses. Thank you for all of your recycling! It has been lovely to hear the children growing in confidence to talk about their own homes and lives with their friends.

In Maths we have been using the language of height, length and weight. We have been ordering ourselves by height, building and measuring towers, ordering teddies and weighing different items from around the classroom to see which was heavier.

Week Six
Book of the Week: Ruby's Worry by Tom Percival
Another marvellous week! Ruby's Worry has been a really powerful book this week and has shown us that everyone worries and that it is ok to be worried about things, as long as you know what to do about it. The children have openly shared things that they worry about and we have made 'Helping Hands' of 5 people who we can talk to if we are worried and thought about the things we could do to address worries or make ourselves feel better. We have enjoyed acting out the story, making our own colour monster puppets and practising our new breathing techniques. The children are talking much more openly about how they feel, which is fantastic!
It was lovely to see so many of you at Parents Evening this week and to share the amazing progress the children are making.

In Maths we have been exploring repeating patterns including patterns in stories (e.g. We're Going on a Bear Hunt), patterns in nature (e.g. on a tiger) and making our own repeating patterns using different resources, indoors and outdoors.
In RE, we learnt about how Christians and Hindus might welcome babies in different ways.

Book of the Week: Me and My Amazing Body by Joan Sweeney
Fledglings have coped really well with the changes in staff this week. Well done Fledglings! The children will be having Mrs Grant again next week.
The children have been finding out all about their bodies this week and have been drawing around their friends and labelling body parts, playing doctors, learning how long to brush their teeth for, sorting healthy and unhealthy foods, finding out what is under their skin and learning about keeping their private parts private. We have been impressed by their knowledge and by how grown-up they have been when we have talked about keeping ourselves safe and healthy. Maybe we have some doctors or nurses of the future in Fledglings Class!
We enjoyed the first half of our class Talent Show and will be inviting the other children to take part next Thursday if they choose.
Our Concept Cat Word of the Week: first
In Phonics we have had a revision week, practising all of our sounds so far. For this reason, there is no new Phonics home learning sheet this week and we invite you to practise the sounds children already know.
In Maths we have been exploring the numbers 1, 2 and 3 in more depth. We have been counting to 3, ordering the numbers to 3, learning how to write them, looking at them in different contexts, counting out amounts and practising a core Maths skill: subitising. This is when you can look at an amount and know how many there are without needing to count them.
In RE, we learnt about how Hindu people show they belong in their family during the festival of Raksha Bandhan. We had a go at making our own Rahki bracelets.
I'm really looking forward to being back with everyone after half term.

Book of the Week: Dogs Don't Do Ballet by Anna Kemp
(Sorry this update is a little late! I was not in school at the end of the week)
What an exciting half term we have had! This week marked the final week of our 'Marvellous Me' topic and Mrs Grant has really enjoyed working with the children to explore the book 'Dogs Don't Do Ballet.' I have really missed the children this week due to staffing shortages (Mon-Wed) and being out of school on a course (Thurs-Fri) but have been popping in regularly to see them and have been responsible for planning and resourcing all of the activities they have been enjoying. I have been having daily conversations with Mrs Grant about how the children have been getting on and have been enjoying hearing about the wonderful play opportunities they have created. All being well, I should be back in the classroom full-time and as normal after half term.
During the week, the children have been learning about ballet dancing, watching famous ballet performances, explore Edgar Degas' ballerina paintings, putting on puppet theatre shows, performing their own talents, thinking about their hobbies and hopes for the future and so much more. They have also been exploring Autumn resources, making Leaf Men, counting out Halloween pasta, making rhyming potions and pumpkin art, and playing turn-taking games together to practise those new skills we have been developing. During group time they have been appraising ballet dancing, exploring high and low notes in music, making predictions when reading stories and enjoying storytelling together.
In Phonics, we have focused on: ff, ll, ss and j. The children are now writing whole words and reading whole sentences in their phonics sessions!
In Maths, we have continued thinking about the composition of 1, 2 and 3. Children have been practising subitising (looking at an amount and knowing how many there are), ordering, comparing and laying out amounts in different ways e.g. 3 is 3 and 0, 1 and 2, 2 and 1, 3 and 0. They have used stories like The Three Billy Goats Gruff to help them.
We loved seeing your Halloween costumes on Friday and hope that the children who attended the disco had a great time!
I am really looking forward to seeing you all again full-time after the holidays for our new topic... *drumroll please*... Let's Celebrate! Within this topic we will be exploring different celebrations from all over the world including Diwali, Christmas, Hannukah, birthdays etc. If you celebrate anything interesting at home, let us know!
